Start putting penetrant on the bolts that hold it in place- otherwise the
straps end up ruined in many cases!

Be gentle removing the float/gauge since it will break if you look
cross-eyed at it!

Consider putting a sloshing sealer in it while it is off.  If it is heavily
corroded inside have it boiled out if it will take it.   Otherwise use some
gravel inside and then slosh it after the loosest material is removed.
