Here's what they do with G.M. rope seals. Remove the lower bearing cap and remove the old seal. Make up a tool, preferably from hardwood that is the same shape as the channel for the seal. Drive the old seal still up in the upper cap on each end to compress it. Cut off pieces of the old seal from the bottom cap and work it up into the new space. Trim the excess flush with the cap.
