Well, and I'm no expert, so wait for someone to back me up on this, but the bolt pattern for a 392 bellhousing is the same as any other A/LA engine right? The difference is in the style of crank flange. Thus, the adapter you have is to bolt a later TF to your 392, where it will already accept a cast iton torqueflite, or obviously a cast iron powerflite. Also, the motor in that '56 looks like a Poly motor, perhaps of the old style that can be converted to a hemi by bolting on earlier hemi heads and such. It would therefore seem to me that you can directly swap the 392 in place of that old poly motor. Garyt Pavlovich or Bill Watson will be able to tell you better if this is true.
