"D" is for Dodge, "P" is for Plymouth.

According to the
book "American Car ID Numbers 1950-1959" the 1959 318 engine numbers started
with the prefix MD2 and the 361's started with the prefix MD3. They were
place on the block as stated below by Frank. I wonder if every book
written has different nomenclature for our cars? Good old Chrysler!
