Dave, I say go for it. Try it yourself. I am by no means a transmission expert but have, with no prior experience, successfully re-built a Chrysler 727, A GM 2 speed powerflite and a GM computer controlled overdrive unit from a mid 80's Caddy. The key is finding a decent manual, its probably covered in the service manual for that car. It is all pretty straight forward. The tricky parts are the final adjustments again that should be covered in the manual. I am not sure what special tools might be required for the older ones but i was able to work around them on the ones that I did. If you could figure out how to make a Delorean out of that box of parts you sarted with you can certainly tackle this job.
