Hi Andy - I did the conversion on my 58 Ply (using the Fram K21 kit) from a shunt-type (canister with large bolt running thru it) to a modern PH8A. Went very smoothly. Takes 30 minutes. Now I can remove the filter from the top, although it's still a tight squeeze. Also, PH8A filters are common. Not the case with CH36APL, which is the filter that the canister requires. > Is it worth doing? It's very difficult to change that upside down canister without having the car on a lift. The first time I tried, I dumped six quarts of oil on my driveway, as the canister wasn't exactly seated correctly. Yes, six quarts. > Is there any reason not to do the conversion? If your car is a show car, you may lose some points, due to lack of originality. I'll take that chance.
