Re: [FWDLK] Hood Springs

Hi to all,
I sent this to Ron and then thought that this may help others.  If anyone needs the photo, let me know and I will send it to you.

I had this very hood problem on my 55 Plymouth.  If the Chrysler has the same set up as the Plymouth, it is an easy fix.  The metal piece at the bottom of the spring needs to be bent forward to cause the spring to be extended more to hold the hood up.  I don't have the car now but if you look at the photo, behind the washer bag is the bottom of the spring.  This hooks over a metal piece and it needs to move away from the spring to let the spring have a greater tension.  I took the spring loose from its position on the bottom tab and put a large 1" wooden dowel down from the back of the hood onto the tab and hit it with a hammer.  It bent it away and made the tension longer, thus stronger to hold the hood up.  Check to see if the tabs are the same length away from somewhere--establish a point to see if one is shorter than the other. In my case my drivers side had been hit in an accident at some point in time and it was bent due to that I believe as I had to bend only one of them to hold the hood up.  Now if you do this please insulate all metal parts (with a towel or some shock resistance material)--hood and mirror etc as when I did it, I just put a new mirror on the outside of the drivers door and wouldn't you know, I missed the dowel and knocked the new mirror loose to where I had to put another new one on.  It worked fine for me and my hood stayed up great.  I hope this helps.

Subject: [FWDLK] Hood Springs

I spent the afternoon under the hood of the 55 New Yorker. The hood springs will barely hold the hood up, if there is the slightest breeze or movement down it comes. I now have the pattern for the hood latch imprinted in my back. Does anyone know where I can buy springs that will do the job and if so what should I be looking for? Guess I should ask a body man, not a mechanic, I'm going to be in trouble for my earlier comment about the engine. Also I am having frequent seal failures between the power steering pump and the generator, the bushing looks OK but maybe it isn't, anybody had this problem before?
