to Roger Van Hoy,
I am assuming you are
serious when you say you do not know what MTBE is.
I think it stands for
methyl tertiary butyl ether. It is a gasoline additive formulated to
reduce air pollution ( CO emissions, I think). I do not know how it works
chemically, but MTBE has been found collecting in and polluting the aquifers and
wells in California, a state which is has the toughest air pollution laws in the
country and which was therefore initially excited about the its creation.
You will remember ethyl alcohol (gasohol)...it lowered emissions (combustion of
alcohol leaves only water and CO2... ) but also lowered the car's
performance. Nobody liked it but at least it wasnt
toxic!
MTBE, by comparison, will soften and eventually
dissolve older rubber and plastic-like stuff (again, I am no chemist) and your
old car IS susceptible. One wonders just how many carfires along the highways
are caused by MTBE.
Check with NAPA or other knowledgeable parts
supply places for resistant rubber fuel hoses...Carb gaskets, I do not know what
one does about them. Older plastic fuel filters are apparently also
vulnerable....
Duh, what's MJB? I mean
MTBE.
