Its not surprising your hose gave when you were parking. That's when the loads on the power steering are the highest. Another source of increased load on the power steering is reduced tire pressure. When the temperatures drop, tire pressures drop also. Your car was in the shop for a while without being driven. That also tends to reduce tire pressures.
