IML: Collector values/Don't derby that Imperial!

As far as collector values, I think the big boom was in the 80's. Especially for muscle cars. A recent Hot Rod had an article about the values rising to 1980's levels. As the owner of a 1970 'cuda my dad bought new, I'm happy. As somebody that will never sell it, I'm a little depressed. A general rule is that people want the cars that they couldn't afford when they were in high school and college. People are generally looking for the top of the line vehicles from 20-30 years ago. The muscle car boom lasted longer because 80's cars were generally dogs. Imperials will always have some collector value as Mopar's absolute top of the line luxury cars, but their big boom is probably past.

As for derby-ing Imperials, why would anybody want to derby a '73? They are unit body, aren't they? Seems there are plenty of lesser cars (GMs :) that would be better suited. I understand they are tough vehicles and Hugh's point about the radiator set back is taken, but $2,500 for a unit body coupe seems excessive to wreck.

My belief is that overall, most of the old cars are commanding less money than a few years back. The exceptions being the muscle cars, and the expected 57 Chevy, 59 Caddies, et al. I always have been attracted to the less popular models since I was a kid. For now, the Imperials seem to be in sort of a nether region between collectibles and old cars. They attract a certain type of person and there aren't enough of us around to rescue all that we like to. Considering how few were built each year, parts are Really gonna be a bear in the future. Hey I was wondering......why do these cars sell so cheap on Ebay?? I think what's gonna happen is that all these Imperials are gonna eventually get blown out for practically nothing to the derby dudes. Until someday there are just a few left. I was talking to a derby guy over the phone a few days ago and it appears that gettings ahold of these Imperials for the track are very desireable because they run so well. So the big question is...are Imperials collectible or are they just fun to run into the ground in derby demolition? It looks like the Derby dudes are gonna win this contest of wills
