RE: IML: two '71 electrical questions

The parking operation is accomplished by reversing the direction of rotation
of the wiper motor.  This involves a separate wire from the wiper switch to
the motor which is hot when the wipers are turned off, and also a cut-off
switch inside the wiper motor to stop the parking motion when the blades are
pulled down to the parking position.  Your failure could be in the control
switch, the wiring from the switch to the motor, or in the motor itself.

To save a lot of extra expense, consult your FSM to identify the one wire
which is supposed to be "hot" when the wipers are off, this is the "park the
blades now" signal - and see if that is present.  If it is, and the wire is
connected all the way through to the motor, your problem is in the motor
assembly, most likely in the "cut-off the power when parked" switch.  These
are often intermittent, and the whole problem might just go away if you
ignore it.  If it doesn't, you will have to take the motor out and see if
you can figure out where the problem is - these are astonishingly
complicated, however!  I've given up on a couple of them, and I don't give
up easily.

The window/lock etc. switch is common to a few years, as Elijah says, and
they can be rebuilt - talk to Elijah.

Hello,
     I have two questions about the mighty '71
four-door for our resident geniuses (no joke!)
     First, the windshield wipers suddenly do not
retract below glass level, where before they did.  
They still seem to wipe OK, and work at all 3 speeds,
but they just stop in place where ever they are in the
cycle when I turn off the wiper switch.
    Second, I will be needing a new ($450+) drivers
power window switch block.  At that price, I don't
mind rooting around some junk yards.  Does anyone know
with which other models/years this switch block will
interchange?  It is an 8-switch block with door locks
at the front of the switch, vent, front and rear
windows in a group of six, and window lock at the rear
of the switch.
