As I'm fond of saying to a fellow Imperialist friend of mine:
Its not the size that matters,
it's how it looks pulling up to the bank that counts.
Seems that I've heard that years back, the govt specified the limits to what
quantifies the maximums of vehicle size, and 80'' wide was one of the specs
I recall.

That was one of the requirements of my last home purchase (4 years ago). I
had a length of twine that was the length of my car (actually a 76 Cadillac
Fleetwood, since it is a couple inches longer than my 64 Crown). When I
was going around with the realtor the first thing I did was check the
garage. If it wasn't long enough, then it was time to go onto the next
house. The house I ended up getting has a 25 foot garage, so I have plenty
of room to fit my Imperial in, though it is supposed to be a 2 car garage,
and once the Imperial is in there, I am not sure where the second care is
supposed to go.

I concur with Eric on the width. I believe that the idea behind that size
was that anything over that would need running lights like a big truck. I'm
sure the 60's and 70's Imperials probably came close to that size, since you
could seat 3 decent size adults across.

Pinesol huh, that sure would smell a lot better, be a LOT cheaper, and I
could clean up the floor with it afterwards. When I clean the carb off our
IMPERIAL..., there that's better :o)

PS. This reminds me of the time I used the 58 at high school prom, as a
gift to the son of a friend of the family. Going to the hotel down town, I
had the young man and his date in the back, and a similar combination in the
front. When I went to pick them up, and it is pretty cool to be picked up
by an Imperial at your high school prom, the young man asked me if I would
take some of his companions waiting for taxis to the follow on party. Why
not? I think I had four couples in the rear, four happy young men in
tuxedos with their formally dressed dates in their laps, and one less happy
boy and his date in the front.
PPS. Several years ago, my daughter, now aged ten, asked me if the Imperial
would be finished by the time she graduated. At the rate things are going,
one step forward and two steps back, I admit to still not being sure.

Well, you got me there.
The smallest garage that I have was not quite long enough to fit the '63 Imperial all the way in and swing the door shut. I should probably admit that the car had a hand in making it possible to shut the door, and there are two "garage extensions" critically placed in the wall board behind the car in the exact shape of those round back-up lights in the rear bumper!
Now the door shuts just fine.

Are you sure you NYB is 233 inches long? My '59 is 226, and would make it
into my one car condo garage only if I cleared everything out of it including the
garbage cans, and even then I would probably have to climb out of the window
to get out of it. As Hugh wrote, when I go to purchase a new home whenever
that time may come in this real estate gone crazy area of Southern California,
garage space will definitely be number one on my list! A nice deep three car
garage would be ideal. My Imperial has been sitting outdoors for some eight to
ten years now, and once I get it repainted, outdoor parking will no longer be an
option. Besides the car is rapidly approaching it's golden years, and is past
the days of sleeping under the stars!
