steering gear adj

The upper side adjustment is the most common and easy to do, but there is also an adjustment on the input side of the gear box, with the large spanner nut near the input side seal, just below where the steering column shaft attaches to the gear box.

Chrysler claims that you should unhook the pitman arm and check the torque necessary to move the steering wheel over the "high spot" or center adjustment (with an inch-pound torque wrench on the steering wheel hold down nut), but if you do the upper jam nut adjustment in small increments AND make sure that the steering returns to center after a turn (as mentioned), you can "shade tree" it pretty well  It might take a few times, but just don't go too far.

Wandering can also be caused by the toe-in adjustment, which could also be related to the worn/aged/settled out bushings in the upper control arm PLUS the bushing in the lower control arm (this one is usually overlooked on the torsion bar front ends as it's inside the lower control arm, where the pivot stub shaft and torsion bar hex is).  Of course, toe-in will also have some tire wear issues too.

Enjoy!
