To anybody receiving ANY "offer" of this sort! This scam has been run on a lot
of people in the past couple years, with merchandise ranging from aircraft to
large boats to collector cars to very expensive horses...... DO NOT ship
anything or turn over paperwork on anything until ALL the money is in your hot
little hands!!
In one well-documented case, a Grand Prix-level dressage horse was sold to
someone through an "agent", about $20,000 in cash money changed hands as the
down and the shipping company was paid up front by the "buyer" to collect and
transport the horse. By the time the cashiers check for the rest of purchase
price got back to the bank (caribbean) of issue, the account it had been drawn
on was emptied. The funds had previously been verified in order to make the
purchase agreement - but there seem to be some pretty lax rules for banks
offshore. In this case, the horse was gone for good, and for about a tenth or
less his actual value.
As to just who it is with such eclectic tastes in merchandise? Theories range
from filthy-rich arab sheiks to someone in Europe with a twisted sense of humor
and a liking for screwing over Americans - I have only heard of it happening to
Americans. The merchandise seems always to be shipped overseas, for some reason!
In this case, let the SELLER beware!
