Dirty 58 HEMI

Hello Dave,
While 44K isn't all that many miles, I wouldn't change the oil to
high-detergent if it has been run that much with non-detergent oil. It would
have built up a certain amount of sludge in the rings and now the detergent
will clean it out which will most likely make it start smoking and/or using
quite a bit of oil. I would pull the valve covers off to see how much sludge
there is under them. I would make my decision about the type of oil to use
only after inspection. It sounds like you need to replace the spark plug
tube seals anyway so, it would not be much more work to pull the covers,
too.
On the other hand, it could run great for quite a long time if you keep on
using the non-detergent if, in fact, that is what has been used for so long.
This was my experience with a 66 Mercury Comet 289 V8 some years ago.

Have a great day,
            Russell Sullivan
