Neutral starter or neutral safety switch

For this era, the starter
switch is the neutral button itself.  You press it in fully, after turning
the key, to start the car.  I await Philippe's more descriptive answer with
some interest.  However, until that time, I'm afraid that his recent
experience, and my own, lend much weight to my contention that there is no
neutral safety switch.

The first statement is correct.  The starter is engaged by pushing in the neutral button instead of turning the key all the way to the right, unlike most cars of the 50's.  However. beyond that stating there is no neutral safety switch is absurd.  Under the heading Transmission Neutral Starter Switch is part number 1770 093 - Switch on Manifold for 57-58 Imperial.  I've replaced many of these over the years, and if you doubt this look in the parts book and also check the wiring diagram in the FSM.  Hugh, I don't mean to bad mouth you, but in this case you really don't have a clue how this system works.  Perhaps you're being advised by the same "mechanic" that worked on your brakes.
