fuel gauge only reads 3/4



I would add to Kerry's excellent suggestion a warning - don't leave the
sender wire grounded for more than a few seconds, as you are running
excessive current through the dash indicator.   A few seconds won't hurt it,
but be sure  to limit it to that.

Michaels suggestion of cleaning the wire connections is also a very good
idea.
