In New Zealand we have a warrant of fitness every 6
months costs about $35.00 and is very tough ,no rust of any kind seat belts must
conform to todays laws, even had to fit them to my 58 when I first put it on the
road. Also had to strip all brakes so they could be viewed and replace old
hoses. We are not allowed oil leaks or any cracks in the glass or lenses.I had a
little rust in the rear rockers that was sighted as being sructural and as such
had to be repaired by an approved repairer and sighted and passed by an
independant surveyer .The testing stations are all online and if your car fails
the info is entered so all other testing centers can see it,should you simply
try your luck with another. All in all it is for safetys sake I suppose .I also
had to replace the front suspension bushes and was quite pleased to see that
they were absolutely knackered when I took them out,yet they felt fine in the
car.Regards HOP

Subject: IML: Inspections vs safety (was
Rusted old cars)
[I can tell you in California, all they care is if the car passes emissions
tests. As long as it's clean, they don't care if the headlights shine in
the trees (or into the opposing lane of traffic) or if the fenders are
flapping in the wind. Clean, yes, safe who knows?]

Question.
Do cars in other states have a yearly State inspection to pass? Here in
New York there is a whole book of things that a car must pass to be road
worthy. For instance, I had to get another tail light lens for my Imp,
because the original owner had put a half inch hole
in one.
Wondering out loud again.
