Carburetor from worse to better

Today I fiddled around with the linkage adjustments, but found if I bent the rod on the fast idle linkage adjustment to line up the screw with the notch, my choke valve would not open, or open very slightly. When I made the rod almost straight, the choke valve was able to remain fully opened, and I got much better performance. I also had the pump adjustment rod in the wrong hole, so I corrected that. Then while talking to a neighbor while idling, it just died, but I figured I ran out of gas which was correct. By my figuring it should have had about half a tank full, so it either leaked out when I had the fuel line disconnected, or it is going through enormous volumes of gasoline. After making the adjustments I also noticed the metal piece which is pulled down to open the valves, was not going anywhere when I would advance the throttle, but later on when I was fiddling with the throttle it finally broke loose and started operating again. The car is now running extremely smooth and very quiet at idle, and it has most of the power back, but is still not responding properly when floored.
