I vaguely remember that the mandatory limit on speed readout (another wonderful gummint idea!) was only in force for a few years. Perhaps by 1983, the requirement was lifted, and since the retrofit kits were produced from 83 on, perhaps only the early ones had the 85 MPH limit. If someone could come up with the design info on the digital dashes, it would probably not be difficult to disable the readout freeze above 85 MPH. Personally, I think 85 is quite fast enough for a 1980's technology passenger car, although I admit I flirt with that limit frequently on long trips. One thing I've never thought to try is switching the readout to KM/H, to see if it tops out at 135 or so. If not, that would be a way to go, just memorize the conversion factor and drive on. On the export versions, they probably didn't care about the stupid US rules.
