I had not known what they were for but it turns out they are return
lines for oil that it directed to two gizmos away from the engine.
One is inside the car, behind the A/C outlet, under the dash. Another
is beside the hood hinge bracket. Who knew? These lines come for the A/C power piston which actuated the air damper
door, one goes to the solenoid (see below) and the other goes nowhere..
it's a drain tube . You must have a solenoid on the firewall near the booster
brake. This solenoid has three oil lines: one is the line i described,
one goes to a steel line which ran along the driver side valve cover and
then attached to a fitting in the oil filler tube. The last line goes at
the rear of the engine, near distributor, at a "T" fitting (with
check valve)connected to engine oil gallery. On this "T" ther's also the
oil pressure gauge line.
This oil powered system is used only on '57-58 AC cars. After Chrysler
went to vacuum system. If you don't use the AC, plug the line coming from
the "T" (but you'll not have defrost cold or hot air.., the power piston
"drives" the lower damper door but also the cowl vent door)
Both rubber lines were in very poor shape and were capable of leaking
furiously. Gary Goers sell replacement hoses (set of 4)
