What I am not sure of is, should I
get another used one or should I try to find a rebuilt.  Does anyone have
any advice on that?

Brad,
Having gone through pretty much the same fiasco that you have described here, I would suggest:
Buy a rebuilt unit and make sure that unit has a new vacuum check valve, and new front seal around the push rod. Total cost for a unit like that is gonna be about $119.oo and then they will give you about $35.oo back when you give them your old one ... with or without the check valve and the front seal.

I said "I would suggest" ... Lemme change that ... "You should not consider doing it any other way!"

Let us know how it works out!
Hope your having a great weekend!
Ron...
