Nope, I don't think the plug wires were the solution then. Idle mixture
only affects the engine at idle speeds, it has no influence on anything
above about 1000 RPM. It wouldn't hurt to take a look under the hood on a
dark night, with someone in the driver's seat to hold it with the brake and
then mash the go pedal in gear to put a load on it for a second or two.
(Don't stand in front of the car!) You may see a bluish flash of light
somewhere - track it down - there's your errant spark.
No good trying this during a full moon (this week for instance), unless you
have a dark garage you can head into (but leave the doors open!).
Other than these shade tree mechanic poor boy tricks, I have no ideas left.
You need to take it to a race car tune up shop and let them put it on a
dyno. Tell them exactly what the conditions are, they should be able to
find it.
