Your post just made me remember a rough running 440 problem I had. It turned out to be the wire goes into the distributor had a break in it. Replaced the wire and it was smooth running. If you have a good distributor from a 383 you can use parts from it to fix the 440's. Take some needle nose pliers and reach down in the hole in the distributor shaft(after removing the rotor) and pull out the oil sponge, seal or whatever you call it. That exposes a clip. Next remove your vacuum advance and remove the screws from the points plate. Remove the points plate. Remove the above mentioned clip and pull out the cam. Do the same with the parts donor distributor and reverse procedure to put back together. You can do the same procedure to turn a points distributor into an electronic one(using parts from an electronic distributor). Some may think this is more work than it is worth, but really it only takes about an hour all said and done(less with experience) and look at all the money you save. I get a kick out of doing something for nothing.
