TBi for 80s Imperials

Sorry it took me so long to post,
I have been dealing with my water pump. And not dealing with it very well
either.
I am posting to the list because everyone was so intested. This guy has a
shop and an 80s Imp, with the original EFI & 29K miles...
Hope this might help someone.

>>Well, the toughest part is the wiring. You must combine engine harness
>>from
>>the truck TBI engine with what's under the hood on the Imp. Factory
>>service
>>manuals (wiring diagrams) are a must. The next problem is trying to find
>>a
>>place to mount the SBEC (engine controller/computer). Believe it or not,
>>that was tough. I ended up removing the coolant overflow bottle, and
>>mounting the SBEC there, then getting a smaller "bottle" and re-locating
>>*it*. I would not do that again though, - it's a bit crowded, plus the
>>location is not really ideal as far as temps go. I am going to try and
>>mount the next one inside the car - if you remove the front part of the
>>plastic housing that contains the SBEC, it becomes quite "flat", and can
>>be
>>mounted on the pass side - right up against the HVAC box, on the
>>floorboard,
>>and not be in the way of any passenger's feet. Cooler spot too. The only
>>drawback is the extra wiring involved (you would have to "extend" about 60
>>wires(!) - plus getting them all *through* the floor.
>>Getting the throttle body mounted to the engine is fairly easy - in fact
>>you
>>can use the stock Imperial injection manifold. I made an "adapter" plate,
>>then re-drilled the manifold (carefully, so no "chips" end up getting into
>>the engine), and using the stock TB EFI mounting, just screwed it to the
>>original manifold. The only reason you need the adapter plate is to be
>>sure
>>of a good seal, - since the original opening(s) in the Imp manifold are a
>>bit large, - the adapter provides a gasket surface.
>>The throttle linkage is right off a pickup truck (cable). It "wraps
>>around"
>>(just like a truck), but it works fine. The stock trans kickdown linkage
>>can be modified to work also (the truck uses a cable setup, - which would
>>also work, but using the original stuff seemed to be easier to me). You
>>can
>>also hook the cruise control up to the TB by using a later model cruise
>>cable and "shimming" it at the servo (a little "trial & error" here).
>>The sensors from the TB EFI can be fitted to the Imp engine without
>>problems
>>. The O2 sensor screws right in the manifold just like the Imp one did -
>>although this spot is not "ideal" for this engine pkg, - as long as the
>>engine is kept in a good "state of tune", there will be no problems.
>>Trouble could arise if the right bank had a problem (like misfiring or
>>something) - in this case, the O2 would never "see it". The truck
>>distributor is a drop in. The VSS (speed sensor) can be installed in the
>>trans just like it was designed for, - or you can just hang it on the back
>>of the cruise control servo. Since the Imp has no speedo cable between
>>the
>>cruise servo and the speedo, this spot is "open", and to me it was easier
>>to
>>do that then to mess around with different speedo cables etc. The thread
>>size is wrong, but if you take an old speedo "adapter" from any old TF
>>trans, you can tap the center of it, cut it off, and use it as a threaded
>>"sleeve" - then the truck VSS will screw right on. I might do it
>>differently next time (like use a different speedo cable) - but you *must*
>>keep BOTH speed sensors - the original one that's already on the IMP
>>(drives
>>the speedo), plus the one for the new injection setup. I tried
>>"combining"
>>them electrically, but I could either get a speedo that worked, OR a
>>reading
>>on the SBEC (SBEC must know vehicle speed), but not both. So you must use
>>both sensors. You also have to tie-in to the trans neutral switch, since
>>the SBEC also wants to know whether the trans is "in gear" or "not".
>>The Imp in-tank fuel pump must be replaced with one for a truck. Not
>>hard, - just remove the old one and "fab" stuff to mount the new one in
>>the
>>same hanger assy. The engine *will* run with the TBI & the stock in-tank
>>pump, but only enough to "move the car around", - there is not enough
>>pressure (or volume either) to actually drive the car. The original Imp
>>EFI
>>has two pumps, - one in the tank, and one on the engine and the stock Imp
>>in-tank thing is more of a "booster" than anything else. You can leave
>>the
>>stock fuel lines on there, and just run (EFI quality) rubber hose to the
>>TB.
>>You can also leave the fuel filters in the stock location (there are two
>>of
>>them under the RF fender). I replaced the originals with Fram G15s (I
>>think) - at any rate, any in-line fuel filter with 3/8" fittings will work
>>-
>>the new system only carries 15psi, so no need for "fuel injection" fuel
>>filters.
>>I even used the "stock" air cleaner assy - so it still looks "stock" under
>>the hood. Clearances are very tight however, as the new TB ends up being
>>about 1/2" taller. Next time I am going to take the TB apart and have
>>about
>>1/4" milled off from each "half", - that will help, and won't affect it's
>>operation. The new air cleaner assy was made by using the "bottom" from
>>the
>>EFI truck, and just cutting away what was not needed - I then "glued" this
>>to the original Imp air cleaner setup (there's a really big "hole" there).
>>Worked OK, and looked fine, but I sure would have liked that 1/2" extra
>>clearance to work with.
>>In your case, - since you don't have the original intake manifold, things
>>will be a bit easier. You can just "bolt-on" the truck TB & intake
>>manifold, and use a stock (van usually) air cleaner setup.
>>I could probably go on & on about this swap, but time won't allow -
>>however,
>>if you decide to do it, I will be glad to offer further assistance. I'm
>>sure there are many further details that would need to be addressed.
>>BTW - the Imp that I changed over to TBI gets about 22mpg average, -
>>however, I would not expect to get that with a 360, - they do not have the
>>best reputation for "frugality"!
