Dick; I just thought that I should add that the transmission coolers on 54' Imperials, or any early hemi, are independent of the radiator. They have a housing to the left of the water pump that contains the transmission cooler so it could be taken out and rebuilt if need be. It is a funny affair where the transmission cooler is acting as a heat exchanger with the coolant flow of the engine rather then with the outside air like the radiator mounted types. One P.I.A with these engines is that they have the generator and P.S pump, in tandem, mounted over the left side of the engine making it a hassle getting the valve cover off to get at the spark plug holes. Still another P.I.A is getting the starter motor off with the exhaust attached but I don't think that is unique to early hemis somehow.
