The very high vacuum created by the closed throttle and high engine speed could suck the restrictions off the idle circuit (remember, fuel is fed at idle not from the venturis but from the idle > circuit, fuel flow driven by manifold vacuum). Or you COULD simply remove the idle mixture screws and shoot some carburetor cleaner in the circuits. That procedure would seem to be much safer to life and limb -- and more likely to actually work. But, admittedly, probably not as much fun. Taking the top off of the carb and cleaning out the fuel bowls is MUCH easier than it sounds. And, assuming that the car has a relatively clean fuel tank, this procedure will provide a relatively permanent fix to the problem.
