This is probably the major source of body reinforcement. A convertible IMLer (like Dan) might be able to tell you what else the factory did. Sooooo, if you bought the car, you could get an x brace welded in and if the shop did a pretty enough job, when you show your '66 four door ragtop off at Carlisle to the numbers match guys you could blame the whole thing on Ghia (and wait for F**d to sue you).
