oil consumption

I had forgotten this until this came up but when I was a teenager my Dad had a 61 Desoto and described the exact same thing.  Always ran a quart low.  I distinctly remember him telling me not to put a quart in until it was well below the low mark.  When we did, it just went away.

years ago friends of mine would tell me to run my mopar V-8's a qt. low as
the first qt. would burn off after 5-750 miles and then stay at 1 qt.low
for the next 1000 miles.

My 57 Imperial did exactly this for the 19 years I owned it. It never went
below one quart low but would never stay at the full mark. I suspected an
incorrect dipstick but I swapped with my other 57 and the same result
occurred. Strangely enough, my other 57 did not exhibit this
one-quart-low trait.

These cars have such personalities!
