>It is also possible that the fuel pump pushrod eccentric on the camshaft has stopped in the "out" position thereby prohibiting you from "retracting" the rod as necessary to install the new pump.  Try rotating the engine slightly (just a tap of the starter should do it) and see if it helps.  Just a suggestion.
