need advice on engine re-build

Its also possible that your timing chain is stretched. Usually this is
accompanied by black smoke from the exhaust. I will answer to you earlier
on the compression test if nobody else does, but it seems that your block
is healthy. You could still have leakage from the valves, and the
compression test will tell. As for the timing, if you don't have a timing
light, you can just advance a hair and see what happens. My guess is
performance will improve. Keep on advancing till you hear knock at WOT,
then back off a hair. In order to advance timing, loosen the distributor
bolt (the bolt above the distributor, its hard to reach without a
distributor wrench, but its doable, 1/2" size on my 68) and rotate the
distributor clockwise. Rotate it very small amount at a time, drive the
car, then advance some more.... When you start hearing knock, turn it back
counterclockwise and leave it there...
