Re: IML: axle ratios/towing

Hola Scott

Since this is an subject that all may benifit from, I will type to all.

Most likely your Imperial came with the standared Imperial 2.93 rear axle ratio.  During that era, the optional ratio was the 3.23:1 ratio.  If you have an Imperial that was ordered with the Sure-Grip the ratio would have been with the 2.93 or the 3.23:1 ratio.  The 9 1/4 size did not arrive until 1967 and none of them have the torque brace welded to the axle housing as your two piece drive shaft Imperial.

The Factory Service Manual ( FSM ) under section Three (3) shows the axle ratios.  I have only the 1963 and 1966 FSM's.  For the 1966 FSM it clearly shows the 3.23:1 for the NY'rs, but nuda for an Imperial with towing.  Some one with an 1965 FSM can fill in the foggy area there.

The Imperial Division did offer an aux cooler for the steering pump and with the transmission on the 1965 Imperials.  At least I will say that I have seen them with my own two eyes.

Here in Colo it is OK to down shift the Torque-Flite Transmission manually to "two" if one is having go problems while leaving Denver on west bound I-70, since MM 260 to MM 254 is a little up-ward ( there are three lanes ).  I can stay with traffic with the 3.9 powered 4 x4 five speed 95 Dakota and the AS on the same grade.

Subject: IML: axle ratios/towing

Roger (and others)

Can anyone tell me how to find out which rear end ratio I have on my '65? Were different ratios even offered then? I have spent the last couple of hours searching the website and so far have not come up with much. I see references to both a  8 3/4 and 9 1/4 rear axle. What is the difference? What is being measured? (Once again I would like to figure out what my car has!)

I am considering pulling my travel trailer with this car to Colorado. It does fine on the flat land, but suspect that it will be challenged by the mountains. The trailer will weigh 5000# once loaded.

Does anyone know if a trailering guide, or trailering package was offered in 1965?

Thanks!
