Before you decide what to do, run a compression check on the
engine to see if you need a valve job anyway. If you do, it sounds like now’s
the time!

Thanks for that advice. I know it's the right thing to
do, I just didn't want to hasten the decline of other worn parts.

If you tighten up the top end you may notice more blow by because the
compression should be better (higher).
I do not think that it will cause the rings to degrade faster, just it
will be more noticable that they are worn.
Also, if you rebuild the
heads and later decide to rebuild the entire engine, the head work will not be
wasted. It also gives you a chance to get in and actually measure the cylinder
wear.

I feel a little better that it's probably not a bullet hole!
Any thoughts on this question? The engine is
very old, with OK compression and no blue smoke
out the pipes. I am just resurrecting her
right now. In a perfect world, I would pull
the motor for a rebuild. I would try to see
how she does first.
A valve job would tighten everything up on the
top end. Would that hasten problems at the
lower end, i.e.: rings?
I would rather postpone (for now) the inevitable engine rebuild. Comments?
