RE: IML: overdrive idea for aluminum torqueflight

I'm coming back into this late, but...
The 518/500 will only fit the small block. That's fine for us 80's owners. I plan to use a 500 behind the efi 318 on my '82 as a test for the '83 360 Magnum. The '82 is my mpg car, so it should help, though I'll have to swap the rear gear because a 2.24 rear does not go well with o/d. Move the mount back, pound up the floor pan for clearance, shorten the driveshaft, wire it up ala the website Kenyon provided and I should be good to go. Fairly easy, but a huge job for me and my driveway. I have pix/instructions from at least 2 guys who have done it in 5th Aves. It'll be at least 3 years before I can put this plan into motion.

You can use them behind a 440 if as Rob McCall stated you use an ultrabell or JVX adapter to mate to the big block. For big blocks the 500 (904 based) trans is probably out of the question. I'm using it because it's smaller and has the low first gear set so I won't be giving up acceleration. There is also a Keisler auto o/d http://www.keislerauto.com/mopar/transmissions/automatic-4sp.asp which AFAIK is based on the GM trans. This is good because it's physically smaller, has a big o/d, low gear and tons of part availability, it's bad because Keisler hits you up for up to $5K for the kit and I know some guys who had horror stories with their "bolt-in" e-body 5 speeds.

The gearvendors should be a no brainer, but for a small block I don't want it because it doesn't provide as much o/d and costs more than the whole A500 will probably run. I don't want close spaced gears. I want 3 speeds and a big coasting o/d.

Rob
