Actually, the Torqueflite was installed in 1956 Imperials earlier than that. My car was built in February and it came with the three speed unit. I believe it was introduced in late January 1956.
It would appear that that paragraph refers to the "manual three speed
transmission" rather than any of the automatics. The three speed torque
flight was installed in Imperials late in the 1956 model year - April-May.

Where does the two speed come in? The '54 and prior seem to also be of
