Cadillac made itself completely different than the top of the line for Buick, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile 98. Lincoln also like Cadillac stood alone against any other Ford product and their other divisions. So again, if the Imperial was to be recognized as a class unto itself it had to be different than the other Models. I believe it fail to do so. Example of today- The Imperial concept car of 2008 looks so similar to the 300 than why would you even look at the Imperial or get excited about it. Why pay more for and Imperial when there is no real difference except for the price tag! In my opinion the New Yorker/5th ave. sold more in the 90's because it looked the same as the Imperial ,but was cheaper! A loaded 5th gave you just as much as the Imperial- In fact , one can argue that the Interior on the 5th was more luxurious than the Imperial. Help me understand The Chrysler mentality on this matter -Regards -Anthony
Many years, the Imperial and New Yorker had little in common - this was true from '57 through '67 or '68. anyway. After that, Chrysler simply couldn't afford to keep them distinct. They've always been the smallest of the big three, sometimes skirting the edge of failure and becoming the next Packard, or Hudson, or Studebaker. Chrysler really can't be compared to Ford or GM financially - for example, from the late '50s through the '80s they really only had 3 native engine lines - A/LA v8s, B/RB v8s, and the Slant 6. Somewhere in the '70s or '80s, they got a 4-cyl., but I don't know if that was an in house design, and some v6-es which I think were originally Mitsubishi. They also picked up a bunch of AMC engines, like the old Jeep straight six, but their engine development budget was always kind of small. Of course, they got a whole new engine lineup in the '90s, with only the Viper engine having any relation at all to the old engines, now.
