My next guess would be a wiring problem. The insulation on the wiring of 1955 Imperials (also the years before, and 1956) is prone to deteriorate worse with age than that of the later cars. It could be that some of the insulation has cracked away where some wires are close together, and touching a little bit, or grounding. Look at it very carefully. Also, a loose or dirty connection can generate enough heat to trip a circut breaker. Paul W.
