RE: IML: 727 Transmission not shifting into 3rd...

Hello Stevan!

Thanks for the offer to rebuild the 727 for me!  But i think Winnebago is a bit of a drive from Miami, FL...  Do you offer free shipping?  :)  Just out of curiosity, what does a rebuild of a 727 run generally?  I'm putting together a budget for buying this 1968 convertible and the immediate repairs will affect my offer.  Are there any particular questions i should ask of the transmission shop before i let them touch the car?

I think i should have them rebuild the one that's already on the car instead of dropping a another rebuild.  Should i be concerned about That?

As for the Bud brakes...  The front front end on this car pulsates when the brakes are applied.  I'm guessing that at a minimum, the calipers need some attention and at most, the rotors are shot.  Can i buy the parts listed on the site for the conversion and bring them to a mechanic for installation?  Will he know what to do if i print out the pages from the repair section of the site?

Also, I've read much about the front disc conversion.  Has anyone converted the rear brakes to discs as well?

Thanks again,

Javier

Hi Javier,
A 727 Torque Flite that won't shift into drive most likely have a front clutch seal problem. You can eliminate the other causes by trying to shift it manually 1-2-3 from a dead stop. The front clutch seal would require removal of the transmission and you might as well go completely through it as long as it's out. We'd be happy to rebuild it for you at our shop.

Subject: IML: 727 Transmission not shifting into 3rd...

Good morning all!

I’m looking at a 68 Convertible in my area that wouldn’t shift into 3rd gear on my short test drive.  I looked into the repair section of the site to see a list of possibilities and maybe I mis-read the section… I found tons of references to letting the Torque Converter fill before driving off, but I didn’t see much about problems shifting into 3rd gear.  Does the torque converter cover this as well?

Since I’m not a mechanical sort, can someone enlighten me on the basics of transmissions, the leading causes of why a transmission would not shift into higher gears, and if I should run in the opposite direction from a car whose front brakes (Bud system) pulsate and transmission won’t hit high gear.  Otherwise this car is “all there” but needs clean up and touch up.

Thanks,

javier
