And peen the
weld as it cools - supposedly relieves the shrinking stresses set up by the
heat....

I've welded cast many times, with
a stick welder. get it very clean, use a nickel rod, and heat the parts with a
torch before welding them, also turn your welder up pretty high.
none of my cast welds have ever failed.
