Actually the valves dont close as tight as solid lifter engines. the lifter pumps up from your oil pressure untill it meets enough resistance to counter the oil pressure its getting, which will not be fully extended if everything is right. think of the lifter as a cylinder that extends to snug everything in the valve train up, taking out all of the play in these parts. when the cam lobe pushes the lifter it does'nt bleed fast enough to compress so the valve is pushed open.
