Clay Smith 60 Custom 67 Crown Coupe
Here in VA if you want YOM (Year of Manufacture) plates on say your 65 Imperial (or any antique car 25 years old or older), one would locate a matching pair of the appropriate year plates, take them to DMV where they would verify the plates. At that point, they would issue you a new registration and you'd be on your way. Takes as little as 5 minutes - longer depending on how many are in front of you lol.

To add a sideline to this thread, also check with your State DMV to see if
you are authorized to put original plates on the car for the era of
production. Here in California you are authorized to purchase the older
plates that were not used by DMV but were purchased by individuals who now
sell the plates. Just fill out the form so DMV can verify the plates are
not assigned, in a few weeks the tags come back and your car has nice old
plates that fit the car, unless you go with vanity plates.
