According to Webster's Dictionary, Imperial has several meanings, one of
which is, 'Outstanding in size or quality'. Both would apply to most any
Imperial.
The concept of Imperialism / colonialism was long ago made obsolete by the
practice of free trade and open markets. Those who would profess that the
name Imperial contains a negative image is working with 19th century
principles that haven't been relevant for the past 100 years. As an astute
list member pointed out, the USA had the opportunity any number of times
over the past century to behave in a colonizing manner and yet has opted to
support national sovereignty and open markets. There should be no reason to
assess this kind of stigma to a car, of all things.
It brings to mind how twisted some simple concepts have become over the past
few decades, mostly under the guise of a socialist mentality, that says that
ego and greed are absolute negatives when they are actually the lifeblood of
self sufficiency; that giving economic opportunity equals exploitation;
that Imperialism / colonialism is a current policy of the USA. To make such
claims is to not understand the human condition, and to speak without regard
to the context of changed perceptions over time and the acts that prove it.
So drive your Imperials with pride, ego, and a measure of greed, merely in
tribute to their sizeable amount of engineering and quality. It's all good!
I responded to this list due to the previous thread on the issue of the
negative impression of the word 'Imperial', and how it is wrongfully tied to
a political context. If anyone wishes to address the political nature,
please see me in the Imperial Salon.
