Re: IML: engine failure due to carb

yes. and the 850 cfm holley carb, was fed by a holley electric fuel pump.
on a roush built 460 crate engine. so you can imagine how much damage in $$ the bad carb had caused.
I should explain a little more. 1st we bought the first carb at a local parts store after we installed it and couldn't get the thing idle after going WOT . so we pulled it off the engine , and tryed another carb the same size. and the second carb had a crack in the rear fuel bowl, so it also went back, the 3rd carb was like the first, but the 4th carb was good at first or so it seemed at that moment, we started the engine and it ran fine , brought the rpm's up to 6k and back down to idle a few times and she ran well with no leaks. so then we decided to drive it to town to get more fuel . she ran fine at 55mph when we gassed the truck up and checked everything under the hood was fine . and we drove around town for a while , no problems but on the return trip back home (20 miles) we decided to see how fast she would go . we burried the speedo and slowed back down to about 60. and I guess it was a 1 or maybe 2 miles latter she started to buck a little . not sure as what was going on and all gauges we reading OK . so we kepped on trucking , when all of a sudden I started to hear some strange sound comming from the headers ( headers only no exhaust on truck) but before I could get to a turn off point down the road, she just died as if the engine had locked up.( hydrolock) right in the middle of the road . after we had the truck towed home ,  we thought the engine was locked up. I decided to pull some parts off the engine to use on anouther truck my dad has, but when I pulled the intake off I could see that there was fuel in the intake runners , after seeing that I quickly grabed a spark plug socket and removed one of the plugs and saw that it was full of fuel also. so then we decided not to scrap the engine " that was a relief to me" so we pulled the engine out and went through it and spent more $$, we didnt want to use a holley carb on the engine after what had happend , so we bought a 850 cfm edelbrock , after installing that carb we started up the truck and she has been running great ever since, but now with fuel prices so high now, I dont get to drive that truck very much, she gets 8 mpg in town and 10 on high way. and the truck now has a complete exhaust under it now after a $200 ticket.
this is why I mentioned that If a person with better luck than I  could possible get a carb custom rebuilt by holley so as to keep their car original. and even after my troubles with them, I am thinking of getting my 59 factory carb rebuilt by them also. but Like I said if what had happend to my truck would have happend to my IMPERIAL, I would be on a rampage and I would want to kick someones butt.

I guess this would be called "hydrolock". When an incompressible substance
fills up the cylinders, or a cylinder. It is usually oil (radial egnines) or
water, and it usually happens when the engine is off and you try to start it.
But with gasoline, while the engine is running, this is very unusual. I am
sure the engine must have been missing badly because several cylinders were
rich beyond the flamability limit. The engine must have been pouring clouds of
black smoke. The poor thing must have given warning, I would think.
Interesting story. I bet connecting rods may have been bent.
