Re: IML: Sure-grip rear end, Gear Ratios & Towing

And a Happy New Year To All

A side subject that is related to this is "Towing with our Imperials".

I have a '63 Le Baron with the Sure-Grip and the ratio is 3:23 to one (
un-altered OEM ). I have found out that pulling a '66 Le Baron east-bound with the
'63 on I - 80 up the grade from Calif to Reno can be done. The same trip
encludes E-B I - 80 out of Salt Lake City with its grade heading back to Colo.

The 1967 Chrysler Towing Brochure states, " Remember a Chrysler, any
Chrysler, will tow loads up to 2500 pounds without the addition of a single extra-cost
item-except the hitch and proper turn signal flasher, of course. "

Later in the brochure it states, " For towing heavier loads get this special
trailer-towing package. (It cost just $53.55.) And you get a package of
heavy-duty components for towing loads up to 5500 pounds. "

The center portion of the brochure shows an Air Stream being towed up a grade
with a family of four in the car. Two of the items they speak of for the tow
vehicle is A/C and Auto-Pilot. The rear axle ratio for the $53.55 package is
3:23 to one. Looking at what is included for the $53.55 towing pkg and how
Imperials are equipped over the STD Chrysler, it seems that it is the ratio of
the rear axle that will make your 1967 and newer Imperial from a 2500 pound
rated tow vehicle ( 2:93 to one ) to the 5500 pound rated tow vehicle ( 3:23 to
one ). The STD ratio for the New Yorkers was 2:76 to one.

And while on the related subject, the 1955 Air Stream Company advertisement
of the twin axle Overlander shows a '55 Chrysler two door pulling it. In 1965
they did a performance test using a 383 powered Dodge Polara ( 2:76 to one )
pulling a twin axle AS Overlander at speeds of over 90 mph and the back cover
of the 1978 Dodge Truck brochure shows a D150 pulling the Overlander.

I hope I covered enough of the Imperial content to keep the " OT " police
away from me.
