RE: IML: steering stuff

Mikey,

I was thinking the same thing. Every Mopar I've disassembled has the wheel,
steering column coupler, and pitman arm keyed to fit only one way. It's
possible to file down the keyway on the wheel and column, but I've never had
to do it.

My concern is that Steer & Gear didn't reassemble Tim's box properly. I've
never used S&G myself. I used Firm Feel for my Barracuda, and have an NOS
box for my wife's Challenger. The Imperial needs to get on the road so I
can assess the box in there...

Something else Tim mentioned. The '67's used a different box from the
'68-up cars? Other than diameter of the output shaft for the pitman arm,
most Mopar power steering boxes are the same. Yes, there are difference for
the Barracuda AAR/Challenger T/A box and the police package firm feel boxes,
but generally the power steering boxes are the same design from the late
'50's or so through the end of the M-body (as well as the end of the pre-'94
Ram, and the B-van front suspension change around that time).

Is there something I've missed regarding the Imperial steering box? Is this
another piece on my '67 LeBaron that I cannot swap with a more plentiful
non-prestige Mopar?

Excuse me if this is out of place or Im wrong..but dont most if not all
steering wheels have a master spline that corresponds to a like spline on
the steering wheel shaft so they only go on one way? Seems that my
Imperial, Charger, Barracuda, and most every other car Ive ever owned was
that way. I wont argue the point of getting the basic alignments down
before getting the car to a front end shop, but as I recall the various
shafts all have a master spline, including the pitman arm .

On the subject of steering hoses....any competent hose shop should be able
to make them, its just inverted flare fittings on the high pressure hose and

they can usually re use the orifice in the center of the old hose. If they
cant, find a different shop. Look in the archives, its been discussed
several times before and I know that Dick Benjamin among others has made
this same suggestion before.
