Other than providing some sort of thinly veiled protection for seller's email, I can't see doing much else as it would just limit who will visit. Seems to me it would make sense to charge the seller a fee, if anybody, as they're making money through the site.

Spams and scams are an internet fact of life these days, I'm afraid.
