You could be lucky and only have a leak in the heater control valvem which is behind the glove box. If so, the smoke you saw might have been condensing coolant seepage. Any moisture on the passenger side carpet? Another possibility is that the A/C evaporator sprung a leak and freon was coming through the vents. There is very little on the passenger side that might cause problems, electrical or otherwise. Now the intrument panel is is another matter.
