Re: IML: Weight

The 2 1/4 ton jack will work just fine.  You only intend to lift one wheel at a time, don't you?  Imperials do tend to be a bit nose heavy, but even then, you can probably lift the whole front of the car without damaging the jack.  Naturally, you do not want to crawl under there with only a hydraulic jack holding it up, but it is better than a bumper jack for changing a tire, on the side of the road, in the dark, and rain.
Just to increase your comfort level, the ratings include a small safety factor.  That 2 1/4 ton jack is probably physically capable of lifting the whole 5,200 lb load without breaking, if you could find a way to balance it.  NOT A RECOMMENDED PROCEEDURE.

On a 5200 lb car using a floor jack at one end, does the floor jack have to be rated for the entire weight? I wanted to keep a floor jack in the trunk and didn't know if a 2 1/4 ton jack would be adequate.  Sears has one that comes in a case.
