Sounds very suspect to me - I think that this type of scam has been reported before - the way to solve this, assuming that you don't have the time to involve any police authorities who would probably only be interested when you have actually lost your money (car), would be to ask the 'buyer' just to send you a bank draft anyway and to worry about his '$5800' on his own time. In any event, even when you have a bank draft in your hands, wait until your bank has confirmed that it is good before you ship the car. Also be careful to tell the 'buyer' that if he is arranging shipping that title to the car passes to him as soon as the car leaves your property and not before and certainly not afterwards!! Ian PS - I'm sure that a US qualified attorney will provide more appropriate advice - I am not legally qualified so take this as you find it.
