You should be able to manually select 2nd gear up to 80 mph or so, even with the
lower geared 57.  Lowering the differential ratio is expensive and will
deteriorate cruising economy, but can improve low speed towing performance. 
May be you can switch back to gasoline when accelerating and towing.

How hot does it get?  If its below 210F (100C) you are OK.  Remember, in terms
of engine life, its generally better for your engine to run a bit warmer rather
than a bit cooler.  If you put your engine through a lot of labor when hot, you
could switch to a higher viscocity oil (20w50).  Provided that your engine
works had while hot, you will not lose fuel economy, while your engine will be
better lubricated.
